The evolution of our brandStarting up a business is just like those first steps/reps you make at the beginning of your exercise routine. When you start out, your joints are dry, muscles tight, blood vessels constricted and it seems as though your heart and lungs are playing to a rhythm of their own. But as you persevere the joints become oiled, muscles loosen up, blood vessels dilate and, before you know it, your lungs and heart are working together and feeding off one another. At this point the endorphins kick in and the mind becomes clear. The road ahead seems to level out beneath your feet, and each bend becomes nothing but a new horizon.That is where we are today... Our minds are clear, we know exactly what it is we wish to offer our clientele and have the tools and energy to deliver it. We have adapted and evolved in response to the needs of our valued clients, and we did this simply by listening and not being afraid to implement change."‘Stepping up’ through time’"We opened our doors on the 1st April 2003 at the Kings Park Medical Centre. We were a team of three co-founders: Selwyn Rautenbach, Louw Burger and Chris Pillay. The location was just 98 square meters, but its four walls were the catalyst that would help us to realise a dream. The dream was to offer more, and it was all about putting in.Through years of experience in the fitness industry, we had come to realise that the very gyms we were always so passionate about, had lost their way. As the fanatical pioneers of the fitness industry aged - and were forgotten - the corporate suites moved in and stripped the industry of its true calling...  To better lives!A loyal following of this rebirth developed and, by the end of the second year, we had expanded to 198 square meters to cater for an ever growing clientele base. In 2006 it was time to do what we love doing most. It was time for us to put back in. We searched for new premises that would enable us to offer the kind of experience we had always hoped for our clients. 106 Montpellier Road had the answers we were looking for. It was 548 square meters of pure excitement for us. We set up a temporary station at the Jewish Club on Durban beach front so as not to disrupt our client’s training programmes and, when the renovations were complete, we proudly opened our doors as the wellness centre that our clients/friends all know and love today.At this time Chris moved on to see through other commitments. We wished him well and both now remain the owners and ambassadors of the physical Impact Empire.Our philosophyImagine yourself as a jug of water. From the moment you open your eyes in the morning you start emptying yourself out into other people’s cups. You make the kids breakfast, pack their lunch, drop them at school and then your day begins. You do what you can for your clients; do what you must for your boss... You get the picture! If you keep emptying out, very soon there will be nothing left of you. You need to find that ‘something’ that puts back in. If you pay for a gym membership, only to hurriedly work up a sweat and leave, then your gym becomes just another place where you expel that precious energy.  What we strive for is to top you up and give back what has been stripped from you throughout the day. STEP 1: Choose Physical Impact Personal Training Centre to facilitate your wellness requirements.Physical Impact offers you a friendly, clean, air conditioned and spacious training environment, combined with equipment biomechanically engineered for your comfort and safety. Therefore insuring your time spent training is pleasurable, goal specific and most importantly injury free.Physical Impact prides itself on its ability to cater for our clienteles' wide variety of fitness needs and wants. These range anything from one-on-one training, group training, sport specific training, corporate wellness, rehabilitation, weight loss to weight gain.STEP 2: Choosing between Personal Training or Casual Membership.Physical Impact offers numerous packages to cater for your training requirements . Take some time to study the different packages on offer and make your choice. Physical Impact prides itself on its highly qualified and experienced Fitness Professionals. No matter your age or gender our fitness professionals adopt a balanced and holistic approach when customising training regimes to suit you and your lifestyle.Casual Membership: Choose the package that suits your requirements (refer to the casual membership tab over-head). Sign the required documentation i.e. Indemnity forms, medical screening forms and should it be required debit order forms, prior to commencing your training at Physical Impact. These forms can be found at reception. Fees:Sign-on fees as well as all fees relative to the package you have chosen are to be paid in full prior to commencing your training at Physical Impact. Please note that included in the sign on fees is your first months membership fees as well as a welcome package. At Physical Impact we pride ourselves in having the Most Flexible Casual Membership Fee Structure Around.It’s our way of ensuring that although you have not utilised our personal training option, you still receive the personal touch we strive to deliver.OPTION 1: Cash MonthlyThis option requires no fixed term contract, and payment is made in cash – upfront for the month. NOTE: Due to the fact that no notice of cancellation is required, this is our least discounted option (But still very competitive by industry standards).OPTION 2:This option requires a 3 month upfront cash payment.NOTE: This kind of commitment earns you our best package under the casual members’ banner, and is highly recommended. This option entitles YOU to a introductory consult , pre-programme assessment, post-programme assessment as well as a training programme to get you started.OPTION 3: Debit Month 2 MonthThis option requires one month’s notice in order to cancel, and payment is made via debit order.NOTE:The additional security that this option affords US means that we can grant YOU a lesser fee.This option also entitles YOU to a introductory consult as well as a training programme to get you on your way.

• Approximately 95 percent of the $1.4 TRILLION spent in America on medical care costs goes directly to medical care services while only 5 percent is allocated to preventing disease and promoting health.• At least 70 percent of all medical care claims are due to modifiable health risks (i.e. stress, smoking, obesity, alcohol use) that are 100 percent preventable. • 65 percent of American adults are not actively engaged in regular exercise and more than 30 percent of adult Americans are obese! Employee wellness programmes are great tools to address these issues.As this is still a relatively new concept in SA we chose to look at some statistics from America where these programmes, through preventative measures had contributed greatly to creating safer, less stressed, healthier and ultimately more productive working environments. Companies who partook in these programmes reported savings on health care expenses, reduced absenteeism costs and a far more productive, health conscious and loyal work force. 95% of the fortune 500 companies in America have employee wellness programmes. Closer to home, according to a 2005 survey by the art of health promotion, companies who instituted these wellness programmes showed a 30 % reduction in medical and absenteeism costs in less than 4 years. When you take into account that in South Africa the annual absenteeism bill is an estimated 12 billion, it becomes very evident how South African companies have underestimated the total impact of a unhealthy, stressed workforce and that while companies are naturally reluctant to partake in these programmes due to the cost factor, once the return on investment is realised they are far more open to discussion!South Africa is facing an ever-growing epidemic,“ obesity”. Independent studies have shown alarming statistics:• Obesity has become a global epidemic with an estimated 1.3 billion people overweight or obese. • According to the World Health Organisation statistics more than 29% of South African men and 56% of South African women are overweight or obese. This is higher than that reported in other African countries. • The increase in the prevalence of obesity has made it one of the primary risk factors for heart disease and has over 60 co-morbid medical conditions related to it (eg. Diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and is associated with 12 different types of cancers). Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death world-wide, causing 17 million deaths a year!!! Research and pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline conducted the study: • It shows that 45 % of South Africans are overweight. • Heart attacks and strokes kill three South Africans, every single hour, according to the Medical Research Council. • Almost half of South Africans do not exercise and 66% think they are actually slim and more importantly do not understand the health implications.It is not just eating too much that is the cause, but also stress has become commonplace in our way of life and more often than not this continuous exposure to chronic stress leads to serious health problems. More alarming were the results from another independent study that showed that 19.6 percent of children aged 6 - 11 years old were obese, while children from 12-19 years of age have an 18.1 percent obesity percentage. Not surprising looking at the results from the adult studies. Keeping in mind that this is the future work force of South Africa, it then becomes evident what the importance is of educating our current work force through wellness programmes. These employees in turn translate this newfound knowledge through to there home environments and this insures a healthier more educated and far more productive work force of the future! Healthy workers are generally happier, less stressed, more satisfied, and more productive in their work as well as their personal life.

BODYBUILDER’S SUCCESS WORTH THE SWEATDedication, hard work and luck combined to put Reggie Msomi on top of his game, writes Debbie ReynoldsIt’s ALMOST impossible not to ogle Reggie Msomi while he’ is working out at the gym. Some take sneaky little looks while others simply can’t stop staring.Reggie takes it in his stride, although he’ is not entirely unhappy about the attention. He is a body-builder; after all, so not having people gape at him would be unusual.What makes Reggie, 22, stand out from the rest, however, and is that he trained seriously for only three months before winning his first title. His first trophy as No 1 novice in the under-65kg category of the KZN International Federation of Body Building was soon followed by a second placing in the federation’s national competition. Until early this year, the Durban University of Technology IT student from Cato Manor was working out in a community gym or using home-made weights. “Blocks and bricks and pieces of concrete,” he laughs.That all changed one day when he served “a mysterious guy” at Café Jiran on North Beach where he works part-time as a waiter.“The guy asked me if I would like to do body-building and, of course, I said I would, “says Reggie.“I didn'’t think anything of it, but the next day me manager called to say a guy called Jono was trying to get hold of me. I thought I had done something wrong – messed up his order or something.“I couldn’'t believe it when he said that he was a personal trainer and offered to sponsor my training”.Jono Eggar takes up the story: “I was sure Reggie could do well; so I went back to Physical Impact where I work and asked the guys if they would waive the gym fees. Not only did they happily agree, but one of the members also sponsored Reggie’s protein shakes and vitamins, while co-owner Louw Burger offered to help with the posing routines.”And so began Reggie’s new lifestyle. Fitting five 80-minute training sessions into a week, while studying and working at his part-time waitron job, kept him on his toes. But, he says, the most critical – and worst – part of the regime was the diet. “I hated it! Besides absolutely no junk food it’s just so boring,” he says. “A typical day would be six scrambled egg whites and jungle oats for breakfast, a boiled chicken breast with pineapple at about 10am, then another chicken breast and basmati rice at 2pm, a sugar free jelly snack in the late afternoon and steamed or boiled fish and green vegetable at night.”He admits, however, that when he say his body shape change and his weight drop from 72kg to 63kg, it was all worthwhile. Which doesn’t mean to say that on the day of the competition he wasn’t nervous? “What do you mean, I was, um, s*** scared! But the minute I got on stage and started my posing I knew this was my game.” His one-minute “free” routine to Michael Jackson’s Dirty Diana sealed the deal and Reggie took top spot in his first competition.He celebrated with Jono and friends, feasting on a Big Mac, chips and cream soda. “Wow that was really great!” He’s taking the rest of the year off to concentrate on finishing his studies and then he going to give bodybuilding everything he’s got.I’ll be taking on the big boys in the open competition around August or September next year and with so much more time to train I hope I’ll make everyone really proud.”Article courtesy of Debbie Reynolds at The Mercury.

KAVEER RAJCOOMAR Age 29Current Stats: 5ft 9 – Weight 78KgsStats: 18 months ago: Weight 135KgsWrites Trainer Bruce BusbyI was approached 18 months ago by Kaveer, who had been referred to me by a client.Kaveer asked me if I could help him lose weight as he was borderline morbid obese, standing 5Ft 9inchs and weighing 135kg. He was shy and suffering low self-esteem as a result of his appearance.I informed him that to succeed, he would have to make life style changes which would include preparing his own meals and being consistent with his training. We agreed to set short term goals which would allow him to achieve this in a relatively short time, thus boosting his confidence and motivation.Phase 1. Lose 10kgs in 10 weeks. Plan – Functional training only this would enable him to utilise his body weight, strengthen his stabilizers and condition his central nervous system in order to cope with the additional stress of high intensity training which would be introduced later.Phase 2. This involved the introduction of free weights and machines together with functional training. The carbohydrates were lowered and essential fats increased. Kaveer lost another 15kgs in 16 weeks. Phase 3. Boxing was introduced together with power movements, such as squats, deadlifts, clean and overhead presses. During this phase which lasted 16 weeks Kaveer lost another 20kgs. He cycled carbohydrates, going as low as 60gms daily. For 4 days then introducing low glycaemic carbs for 1 day over 7 meals then repeating.Phase 4. Here we introduced a competitive bodybuilding program lasting 16 weeks. Kaveer lost a further 16kgs, bringing the total weight loss to 61kgs.Phase 5 : MAINTENANCEHaving achieved his ideal weight together with an increase of lean muscle mass, he now maintains a healthy eating program with cheat meals on week-ends only.Kaveer is now outgoing, in great shape and getting married in December.

He’s the really fat guy” at the gym. Theman youtry to avoidlooking atfor too long or too hard. But, asterrible as it sounds, he probablymakes you feel a bit better aboutyourself as you slog away on thestep machine. Why? Because,regardless of how many extra kilosyou’re carrying, at least you’re “notthat bad”.He is Yusuf Rawat and he weighs115 kg. Sounds like a lot? Well, nottoo long ago, this 30-year old fromDurban weighed a whopping 215 kg!His 100 kg weight-loss journey hasbeen one of courage, commitmentand raw determination.It all started in 2005 when life wasat an all-time low. Yusuf had justcompleted a marketing diploma andhit the job market only to have aseries of doors slammed in his face.“I was always short-listed forinterviews,” he says, “but as soon theysaw me I knew I was doomed.”Already suffering from the lowself-esteem which had dogged himsince childhood, Yusuf was morbidlyobese, due to a long history of badeating patterns, no exercise andsuffering form bipolar disorderwhich lead to binge eating. All thesefactors converged to convince himthat he had no reason to continueliving. So, on a Saturday in September2005, he swallowed 100 painkillers.Yusuf’s parents found him shortlyafterwards and he was rushed tohospital just in time.“It was here that I met a caringand understanding psychiatrist,Dr Keshika Singh, who diagnosedme with bipolar disorder,” says Yusuf.“When I was depressed, I ate. At lastnow there was a reason for myobesity and therefore, hopefully,a cure.”Yusuf describes bipolar disorderas “K3G”, the abbreviated Hindititle of a Bollywood movie, KabhiKhushi Khabi Gham, which meanssometimes happy, sometimes sad.“Half the problem is solved withmedication and the other half withcounselling,” he continues. “ButKeshika treats the symptoms aswell as the problem. She’s taughtme that other people don’t change,but that I can change myself.”As Yusuf’s mental healthimproved, Dr Singh suggested heconsider gastric bypass surgerywhich, in layman’s terms, meanscreating a smaller stomach pouch(about the size of a wine glass)which is separated from the rest ofthe stomach. This smaller “stomach”significantly reduces the amount offood which can be consumed. It alsohas a newly-created outlet whichbypasses the rest of the stomachand smaller intestine resulting infewer calories being absorbed asfood passes through the body.According to the South AfricanSociety of Obesity and Metabolism(SASOM), this procedure results in afeeling of fullness that reduces thedesire to go on eating. But after thesurgery, the patient needs to stick toa prescribed eating plan for life – orrisk feeling nauseous from overeating.In some cases, the diet also >picture: istock70 | WINTER 2009 www.youpulse.co.zaBODY BY NUMBERSThe BMI is considered a useful tool for assessing bodyweight and health – although it should not be used inisolation. For instance, it over-estimates body fat inathletes and those with muscular builds, but under-estimatesbody fat in older people who have lost musclemass. It should also not be used for children.To calculate your BMI, divide your weight in kilogramsby your height in meters multiplied by your height inmeters.Generally, if your BMI is below 18.5 you’re underweight,if it’s above 25 you’re overweight and if it’sover 30, you can be classified as obese. Morbid obesityis indicated by a BMI of 40 or more. The measurementis the same for men and women.needs to be supplemented with multivitamins,and a few patients may sufferlow blood sugar levels, which couldlead to black outs.Although gastric bypass surgery is anestablished and effective extremeweight-loss aid, which medical aids payfor if a patient’s morbid obesity isconsidered life threatening, Yusuf, whohad no medical aid, had no way offinding the R80 000 for the procedure.“But Dr Singh said she would motivatefor it to be done at a governmenthospital,” says Yusuf. “And on May 222006 I said hello to a new beginning.”Before the surgery, Yusuf had toundergo numerous tests and evaluationswith a multi-disciplinary teamfrom Durban’s Inkosi Albert LuthuliHospital – an endocrinologist,laparoscopic surgeon, anaesthetist,plastic surgeon, dietician, biokineticistand psychiatrist.“There are risks in having theoperation,” says Yusuf. “But the risk ofnot treating morbid obesity is actuallyfar greater. So, for me there was simplyno option.”If the surgery was a new beginning,then Yusuf’s story continued with aradical change in diet, exercise andattitude. As a child, he’d tried severalweight-loss treatments with little or nosuccess. “My mother put me on plentyof diets, including Weigh-Less at theage of six*. Then there were all thedifferent slimming pills . . . but nothingworked. If I lost weight, I just piled itback on. In high school I even had myjaw wired, but the wires soon snapped,Before the operation anincredible 30 kg of excessskin used to hang inloose folds from Yusuf’storso. The stretched skinwould interfere with hiseveryday movementsand workout sessions atthe gym. Yusuf had to undergotwo operations toremove the excess skin,the latest concentratingon his enlarged breastsand flabby upper arms.Professor Anil Madaree,head of Plastic and ReconstructiveSurgery atthe Nelson R MandelaSchool of Medicine performedthe operation.In addition to the breastreduction, the areolaswere reduced and removedand the skinunder the arm tightened.Great care was taken tohide the bulk of the scarsunder Yusuf’s arms andin the breast fold.so that was a waste of time.”By the time he matriculated, Yusufweighed a staggering 170 kg. His typicallunch was a junk-food jamboree,comprising a fizzy cold drink, creamdoughnut, chocolate éclair pastry, tworolls, a packet of chips and two icecreams. But he would gain another 45 kgbefore reaching what he calls his “re-birth”.Immediately after the procedure, thereborn Yusuf started losing weight. Sixweeks later he got a job as a marketingmanager. “Suddenly people werelaughing with me rather than at me.When my pants fell down at work thestaff applauded and then rushed to helppunch extra holes in my belt. My pantssize dropped from a 10XL to an XXL.”To bolster his burgeoning weight-loss,Yusuf enrolled with a personal trainer.“My trainer Michael Reimers helped melose another 30 kg, after which I couldhave the second skin removal operation.I do cardiovascular and weight trainingfive days a week – I’m much moreenergetic now.”His diet, planned by a dietician, has alsochanged radically. On an average day he’llhave oats or bran cereal for breakfast,grilled chicken, salad and a slice of breadfor lunch, and fish or chicken with grilledvegetables for dinner with fruit andyoghurt snacks in between. “I’m allowedto cheat every now and again,” he says.“But my life doesn’t revolve around foodanymore.”Yusuf may have hit his thirties, but hefeels like his teens have only just begun.He has a lot of good years and goodtimes to catch up on. “I still have to loseabout 25 kg to reach my goal weight . . .but I will get there,” he says resolutely.Of course, losing such a vast amount ofweight brings its own set of problems –one of which is excess stretched skin,which often needs to be surgicallyremoved. Yusuf had to undergo twooperations to remove excess skin.And, although Yusuf still hasn’tfinished his journey to health, he hasgoals to reach for and aspirations toachieve. He also has plenty of simplepleasures to enjoy.“I want to go swimming without my Tshirtfor the first time in years,” he laughs. “Iwant to learn to play tennis and squash. Iwant to wear fashionable clothes. I wantto travel. And I want to know what fallingin love feels like.”* NOTE: Weigh-Less only recommends their eatingplan for children from age nine.SNIP AND TUCKexcess skin rem ovalLosing a large amount of weight generally resultsin massive folds of excess skin that don’t shrinkin relation to body weight lost. This “redundant”skin is found around the abdomen, waist, upperleg, upper arm and breast or chest area.In Yusuf’s case, two operations were necessaryto remove his excess skin. The first procedure inJuly 2008 removed skin from the abdominal area,which Yusuf says was “like an apron” hangingfrom his waist. Then, in June this year he underwentsurgery to remove skin from his chest andarms. Both operations were conducted at AlbertLuthuli Hospital by Professor Anil Madaree, headof Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at theNelson R Mandela School of Medicine.As part of the multi-disciplinary team whichtreated Yusuf, Prof. Madaree stresses theimportance of a patient’s “real commitment” tolosing weight and changing his lifestyle. Why?Because this is a complicated process that startslong before the gastric bypass operation andcontinues almost indefinitely.“But thanks to the team I was properly educated,prepared and supported,” says Yusuf. Althoughthere were certainly challenges along the way.For instance, after his second operation, Yusufneeded to be hospitalised for around ten days. “Itwas more complicated than just removing excessskin,” says Madaree. “Morbid obesity in men cancause gynaecomastia, which is the abnormalenlargement of the breasts. Yusuf’s surgeryrequired breast removal and the reduction andreplacement of the areolas.” Yusuf’s areolas,the circular skin surrounding the nipples, werelargely extended because of the large breasts.They were removed as in a normal breast reduction,and then made smaller and replaced to fitwith the smaller breasts.Skin also had to be removed from his chest andupper arms.“The excess skin was cut off and great care takento place the ‘scars’ in acceptable areas,” said Madaree.“The wounds also have to be stitched veryfinely.” That’s why, says Madaree, this proceduretakes two to three hours under anaesthetic andrecovery has to be strictly monitored.

SYNCHRONISED SWIMMERS TO COMPETE IN CHINAA team of twelve synchronised swimmers has been selected to compete for the South African team at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China, in July. Team members from Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth will be competing in this prestigious competition. They will swim in the technical and artistic solo, duet and team events.The girls range in age from 15-25, and all have one common goal - to represent South Africa with honour and pride. As the trip is self-funded, this experience could not have been possible without fundraising and the support of the community.The team is based at Physical Impact Gym in Avondale Road, Durban, and the swimmers really appreciate their support
